Network Honors Two of U.Va.'s Finest Physicians
 

Dr. Raghu Mirmira and Dr. John KattwinkelFOR ONE NIGHT, they were stars. Dr. Raghu Mirmira, top, and Dr. John Kattwinkel were honored for their medical achievements June 23 in a Hollywood-style gala in Washington's Constitution Hall. Mirmira was recognized for his research on the insulin gene, while Kattwinkel earned acclaim for his tireless efforts against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. "The Discovery Health Channel Medical Honors" will be broadcast Thursday, and the 13 honorees are featured in the current edition of U.S. News & World Report magazine. Full story.

PIeces of new metal
'Amorphous Steel' Could Revolutionize Industry

Three U.Va. scientists recently unveiled a new variety of “amorphous steel” that is three times stronger than regular steel and is non-magnetic. The material could be used to make better ships, cars, surgical instruments or recreational equipment, perhaps as soon as three to five years from now. Full story.

Incoming Class is Academically Stronger, More Diverse

As a whole, U.Va.'s Class of 2008 will be more diverse and even better prepared than last year's entering class, according to figures announced last week. "Diversity and quality are the two primary concerns of this office, and the entering class is strong in both areas," said John A. Blackburn, dean of admission. Full story.
