U.Va. Summer Film Series Examines African-American Issues, Culture and History

The University of Virginia has among the highest African-American graduation and retention rates in the nation, and this is largely due to the efforts of the Office of African-American Affairs. Since its creation in 1976, the OAAA has been instrumental in implementing programs and outreach that enhance the University’s sensitivity and awareness of African-American issues, culture and history. One of the current programs is the Summer Film Series, which features a weekly movie examining some aspect of African-American culture. The series began on June 14 and features movies on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in Kaleidoscope at Newcomb Hall through July 26. The three features remaining are: “Crash” on July 12; “The Learning Tree” on July 19; and “Hotel Rowanda” on July 26.

Beatley, along with Tanya Denckla Cobb (left), senior associate at U.Va.’s Institute for Environmental Negotiation, designed a series of courses that explore food as the foundation on which a sustainable community is built.
