The
University of Virginia has among the
highest African-American graduation and
retention rates in the nation, and this
is largely due to the efforts of the
Office of African-American Affairs. Since
its creation in 1976, the OAAA has been
instrumental in implementing programs
and outreach that enhance the University’s
sensitivity and awareness of African-American
issues, culture and history. One of the
current programs is the Summer
Film Series,
which features a weekly movie examining
some aspect of African-American culture.
The series began on June 14 and features
movies on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in Kaleidoscope
at Newcomb Hall through July 26. The
three features remaining are: “Crash”
on July 12; “The Learning Tree” on
July 19;
and “Hotel Rowanda” on July
26.

As
you sit down to eat a meal, do you ever
give any thought as to where the food came
from? “We
need to understand where food comes from
and how precious it is and its connection
to so many of the issues that we are already
thinking about,” said Timothy Beatley
(right), Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable
Communities in the University of Virginia’s
Department of Urban and Environmental Planning.
Beatley, along with Tanya Denckla Cobb
(left), senior associate at U.Va.’s
Institute for Environmental Negotiation,
designed a series of courses that explore
food as the foundation on which a sustainable
community is built. Full
