“Seed Wars:” The Promises and Pitfalls of Agricultural Biotechnology for a Hungry World

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS have vastly enriched American society and the economy, resulting in improved standards of living and longer life expectancy. But can the advancements in agricultural biotechnology, otherwise known as genetically modified organisms, solve the major social problem of world hunger? Understanding U.Va.’s Mental Health Benefits

Sometimes life can throw us a curveball. Circumstances such as a divorce or an ailing family member can cause overwhelming stress. U.Va. employees should know that there is a valuable resource for those who need to talk to someone. The Faculty and Employee Assistance Program offers free and confidential help, with five licensed clinicians on hand to assess a problem and figure out what the next step should be. The help doesn’t stop there — FEAP can give referrals to counselors outside the system. Full story.

Incoming Students Get Feet Wet During Orientation

Incoming first-year students and their parents gathered on Grounds earlier this week for the seventh session of summer orientation. They learned about course scheduling, were introduced to student life, and began to find their way around. Another of the two-day sessions begins today, with students scheduled to move in for good on Aug. 28.
