U.Va. Center for Transportation Studies Now at the Helm of Virginia’s Local Technical Assistance Program

THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA’S Center for Transportation Studies has assumed responsibility for the Local Technical Assistance Program in Virginia, a federally funded program designed to increase the knowledge and skills of local transportation service providers to improve travel around the commonwealth. “Hosting the LTAP will help us share new knowledge with Virginia government officials in the field of transportation,” said Lester A. Hoel (left), director of the center and L.A. Lacy Distinguished Professor of Engineering. Full story.

No Butts about It: Recent Policy Changes at U.Va. Include No Smoking
The University of Virginia has recently implemented a new policy which prohibits smoking inside all facilities owned or leased by U.Va. and in any University-owned vehicle. Smoking is no longer allowed in private offices with adequate ventilation or former indoor designated smoking areas. This revised policy provides employees and students with a smoke-free environment in which to work and learn while protecting them from the potential health hazards from exposure to smoke. Other policy changes include creating a safer working environment for U.Va. employees who are required to enter and work in a confined space, as well as a revised policy on the use of the Rotunda. See full details of recent University policy changes.

Phase One Expansion of Heart & Vascular Center Complete

The Heart & Vascular Center at the University of Virginia treats more than 35,000 inpatients and outpatients each year. One of the goals of the center is to make each patient’s visit as comfortable as possible. With capacity, integration and comfort in mind, the center embarked on a four-phase expansion project — of which Phase One was completed in June — designed to provide patients the full gamut of heart and vascular care in a single location, within a healing, soothing environment. A new, second-floor bridge between U.Va.’s Heart & Vascular Center and the Primary Care Center (above), designed to significantly ease patients’ travel between clinic visits and accompanying diagnostic exams, is one of several additions to the state-of-the-art center. When the expansion is completed next year, the center’s clinic and laboratory space will have tripled. Full story.
