ANY
WAY YOU slice it, Greg Humphreys is a master when
it comes to solving problems.
Humphreys, a U.Va. assistant professor
of computer science, is earning national acclaim
for his state-of-the-art “Chromium” computer graphics
software, which uses PCs working in a “cluster” to
break down large sets of data into smaller
pieces that are then reassembled like a puzzle to
create a visual display. “Computer graphics are easy
to explain but hard to do, which is what attracted
me to this subfield of computer science,” says Humphreys.
In recognition of his efforts, Humphreys
and a team of collaborators recently
earned
a prestigious industry award, the R&D 100. Full
