U.Va. Computer Scientist Develops Graphics Software

Greg HumphreysANY WAY YOU slice it, Greg Humphreys is a master when it comes to solving problems. Humphreys, a U.Va. assistant professor of computer science, is earning national acclaim for his state-of-the-art “Chromium” computer graphics software, which uses PCs working in a “cluster” to break down large sets of data into smaller pieces that are then reassembled like a puzzle to create a visual display. “Computer graphics are easy to explain but hard to do, which is what attracted me to this subfield of computer science,” says Humphreys. In recognition of his efforts, Humphreys and a team of collaborators recently earned a prestigious industry award, the R&D 100. Full story.

Architecture School employees Tiffani A. McGee (rear) and Derry V. Wade are shown scooping ice cream to serve to senior citizens at the Mary Williams Senior Center last year. Projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Assignments will be made later this month. Full story.
