Arrival of Class of 2009 Signals Nearing of Summer’s End

move-in day at U.Va.THINK OF FRIDAY as the “calm before the storm,” for Saturday, more than 3,100 students will blow into Charlottesville in preparation for Wednesday’s beginning of the fall semester. U.Va. Police officers will be on duty throughout the day to handle the influx of traffic generated by 5,000 to 8,000 cars carrying an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people onto Grounds. An address to parents by U.Va. President John T. Casteen III, a Convocation and Honor Induction and a reception at Casteen’s home, Carr’s Hill, head the agenda of events preceding the beginning of the new school year. Full story.

Should such a crisis happen during this year’s “move-in day,” the U.Va. Police will be well equipped with the installation of 13 life-saving automated external defibrillators in their fleet of patrol cars. The devices, which were purchased for $21,759, are scheduled to be installed by 7 a.m., in time for the projected early arrival of new students. Full story.
