THOUGH THE STATE’s contribution has fallen from 27 percent of the University’s budget a decade ago to 8 percent today, U.Va. is still among the elite major universities in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report magazine. In its annual rankings released today, U.Va. is listed as the No. 2 public university in the nation and 22nd overall. Full story.

Kirsten Beattie, a 2003 alumna, is keeping a diary of her adventures as a UK Fellow in Scotland, where she is teaching and mentoring students at Fettes College in Edinburgh under the sponsorship of the U.Va. Center for Undergraduate Excellence. In her August entry, she celebrates a 95-mile hike across the Scottish Highlands — which she says reflects her newfound willingness to try new things.

When Terry Holland came to the University to coach basketball in 1974, some said that it was impossible for U.Va. to have top-flight programs in both its classrooms and its sporting venues. As he leaves three decades later as one of the towering figures in Cavalier athletics, he has proven the naysayers wrong.
