William M. Shobe New Head of Economic Research Program at U.Va.’s Cooper Center for Public Service

REGULATORY EXPERT William M. Shobe has assumed the position of director of economic and business research at U.Va.’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. Shobe comes to U.Va. from the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget, where he was an authority on government regulations and fiscal forecasting. He succeeds John L. Knapp, the center’s noted longtime economist, who retired in June and will continue working there on special projects. Full story.

Rust Spots Don’t Grow Alone: Research Outlines New Theory of Corrosion

Each year, billions of dollars are spent by American businesses and industries on damages caused by corrosion. Rust, under the right conditions, can spread like wildfire, reaching epidemic proportions. Jack Hudson, U.Va. professor of chemical engineering, and John Scully, U.Va. professor of materials science, along with German researchers, have come up with a theory on the development of corrosion that’s contrary to what other scientists believe. Kerry’s Daughter Brings Campaign to U.Va.
Vanessa Kerry

Like father, like daughter. Vanessa Kerry, the 27-year-old daughter of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John F. Kerry, visited the U.Va. Grounds Thursday for a question-and-answer session with students. U.Va.’s Center for Politics sponsored the appearance, which gave a glimpse into the chaos that accompanies a presidential campaign. Students expressed their appreciation for Kerry’s efforts to reach the younger voters. Full story.
