Nursing Student’s Lend Helping Hands Worldwide

children of San SebastianAFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE and properly-equipped medical facilities are almost non-existent in the poverty-stricken village of San Sebastian, El Salvador. But, thanks to a group of U.Va. students, that is about to change. Nursing Students Without Borders, a student organization that provides health education to developing countries, will donate their expertise and labor, as well as funds for materials, to build a medical facility, complete with waiting and exam rooms, plumbing and electricity. Art Dept. Faculty Have the “Last Tango”

U.Va.’s art faculty will say farewell to Fayerweather Gallery with “Last Tango,” this year’s annual faculty art exhibit, on display through Sept. 26. An opening reception will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. Full story.

Distance Learning Celebrates 20 Years

In response to a need for greater technology education opportunities in Virginia, the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program was introduced 20 years ago to allow students earning their master’s degree in engineering to take classes at any one of five participating universities in the state, including U.Va. This distance-learning program, one of the first in the nation, now enables students to “attend” lectures at other state institutions, while completing course requirements at their home schools.
