Faculty Diversity on the Rise; U.Va.’s Gertrude Fraser Leading Efforts to Improve Recruitment and Hiring

THE HIRING OF a professor is something that U.Va. doesn’t take lightly. “Faculty selection is as important as research and teaching,” said Gertrude Fraser, U.Va.’s vice provost for faculty advancement. Fraser is part of new efforts to strengthen recruitment and hiring practices, including the implementation of new guidelines, workshops, an online tutorial and a faculty recruitment manual. And, though the effort has just begun, the number of new female faculty alone speaks to its early success. Of the 37 females offered tenure-track positions this school year, 27 accepted. That’s a 73 percent acceptance rate, compared to 54 percent last year. Full story.

President Casteen Issues Videotaped Message on the Importance of Diversity

On Friday, U.Va. President John T. Casteen III issued a videotaped message in which he discusses the importance of diversity in the University community. “We value diversity here because it has to do with the human richness, the variety of experiences and backgrounds and perspectives and reasons for learning that distinguish us as people based on our own backgrounds, our own expectations, our own prior experience,” said Casteen. The statement, which will reside on the University’s diversity Web site, can be reached from the University’s home page, in addition to a dozen other U.Va. Web pages. Full story.

Carr’s Hill Playing Field Undergoes Extensive Makeover

The grass is always greener when it’s — fake. By all outward appearances, the lush turf at the University’s Carr’s Hill Field looks like any of the other playing fields. In fact, the new field, which will be used for club sports, marching band practice, intramurals and academic classes, is artificial. The project, which cos about $1 million, includes a new playing surface and upgrades of underground systems such as sewer pipes, storm water lines and the water main running under the field.
