U.Va. Ethics Professor Jonathan Moreno to Speak, Hold Signings For New Book on Biomedical Ethics

WHILE THE GROWING TECHNICAL capabilities of modern society offer tremendous new benefits for medicine and scientific research, they also pose powerful challenges, says U.Va. ethics professor Jonathan D. Moreno. How do we strike a human balance between helping to advance medicine while doing no medical, moral or psychological harm? Moreno addresses this and other questions in his new book, “Is There an Ethicist in the House? On the Cutting Edge of Bioethics.” Moreno will hold the first of two local talks and book signings at the U.Va. Bookstore on Sept. 20. Full story.

FBI Investigation Reveals No Racial Links to Graffiti Found on Beta Bridge

An FBI investigation to determine the meaning of graffiti found last week on U.Va.’s Beta Bridge has revealed no links to recent racial incidents or to the Ku Klux Klan, as first speculated. U.Va. President John T. Casteen III requested that the FBI review photos of the graffiti images, which included, among other things, derogatory images of women, a red eye and the words “G Wizard,” “G Society,” and “G Bug.” “I am grateful to the many people who worked overtime for several days to resolve what had become a sensitive public issue in our community,” said Casteen. Trip to Seoul Touches the Souls of U.Va. Students, Faculty

This summer, a group of U.Va. students and faculty got the chance to step back from the academic and theoretical side of feminism and see it through the eyes of women who make it their jobs to protect and fight for their rights every day. The group traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to attend the Ninth International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women, held June 19-24, which coincided with U.Va.’s first international women’s studies course, ““Local Feminisms, Global Perspectives.” Full story.
