University of Virginia Observes Constitution Day

JAMES MADISON'S HANDIWORK takes center stage at Thomas Jefferson’s university in mid-September, thanks to a provision tucked into a federal spending bill last fall. The measure, backed by Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., requires all educational institutions that receive federal funds “to hold an educational program” for students “pertaining to the U.S. Constitution on September 17th of each year.” When Sept. 17 falls on a weekend, as it does this year, schools may celebrate “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” in the preceding or following weeks. To celebrate the national release of “Cry_Wolf,” the directorial debut of Charlottesville native Jeff Wadlow, he and leading actress Lindy Booth will attend a special screening of the film on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at Newcomb Hall Theater. Proceeds from the event, including a Q&A session, will benefit the Virginia Film Festival and the U.Va. Clinical Care Cancer Center. Tickets for the “Cry_Wolf” screening are $10 for the general public and $8 with a U.Va. student ID. Tickets will be available by phone at 924-7314, in person at U.Va.’s Newcomb Hall Theater box office, or online at www.vafilm.com. The screening is a special presentation of the weekly UPC Cinematheque series.

Patients Achieve the Unimaginable
Peggie Donowitz loves her job as an advanced practice nurse at the U.Va. Health System. She gets to see chronically ill patients come here searching for a better quality of life– and finding it.
Donowitz, R.N., MSN, works closely with Jonathon Truwit, M.D., head of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, to help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) access the most advanced medical and surgical treatments. Emphysema is a common form of COPD, a group of lung diseases affecting 3 to 4 million people and the 4th leading cause of death in the United States. Often, these patients come to U.Va. carrying oxygen tanks and struggling to walk a few feet. Donowitz follows them through their first clinic visit at U.Va., several weeks of physical therapy, surgery, and more weeks of physical therapy. Full Story.
