On Friday, community members came together once again as U.Va. President John T. Casteen III (at podium) and the Board of Visitors Special Committee on Diversity addressed a crowd of several hundred students, faculty and staff members on the steps of the Rotunda. “We’ve come to express unity, I've come to express solidarity,” Casteen said. Black ribbons were distributed and asked to be worn as a way for individuals to show their commitment to defeating acts of ignorance and cowardice. Full story.

U.Va.’s Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine ROTC will honor members of the United States Armed Forces who have been prisoners of war or have been listed as missing in action in a ceremony today at 3:30 p.m. at the McIntire Amphitheater. National POW/MIA Day, which has existed since 2000, is held on the third Friday in September, and U.Va.’s ROTC units set their ceremony date within a week of the national POW/MIA recognition date. Roughly 250 ROTC cadets will march in formation onto the field behind the cadet joint service honor guard at the start of the ceremony and remain in formation while the flag bearer mounts the stage and posts the flag.
