Terry Belanger  

THERE’S MORE TO A book than meets the eye. Terry Belanger, U.Va. professor and director of U.Va.’s Rare Book School, knows front to back the history of books and printing, rare book librarianship, and related subjects including typography, binding, illustration, the regulation of the press, publishing history, the geography of reading and book collecting. For his ingenious creativity, Belanger has been named one of 25 MacArthur Fellows for 2005. Each fellow will receive $500,000 in support over the next five years, to be used at the recipient’s discretion. Full story.

Online Newsletter Debuts; ‘HR Around Grounds’ Keeps U.Va. Employees Informed

University Human Resources has launched a Web-based newsletter, “HR Around Grounds.” The bimonthly publication provides information, resources and tips of interest to classified staff and faculty and includes a special section for managers. The newsletter will provide employees and managers with details on hiring, evaluations, open enrollment, W-2’s, education benefits and rewards and recognitions. Employees can access the newsletter by either of two ways: subscribing by e-mail or by viewing online. Full story.

As the demand for health care continues to rise, so does the demand for additional patient space. U.Va.’s Board of Visitors Buildings and Grounds Committee approved preliminary plans for a $78 million hospital expansion and a second building for the School of Nursing at its Sept. 16 meeting. The committee also heard reports on other issues, including historic preservation and a faculty statement about U.Va.’s architectural style and new building plans. Full story.
