Dr. Barry Marshall, Professor of Research in U.Va.’s School of Medicine, Wins Nobel Prize For Medicine

DR. BARRY MARSHALL (left), professor of research in U.Va.’s School of Medicine, has been awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Marshall is the first current member of U.Va.’s faculty to be honored with a Nobel Prize. It was Marshall’s research that revolutionized the understanding of the link between ulcers and gastrointestinal diseases. “His work highlights the spirit of innovative and critical thinking that the U.Va. School of Medicine fosters,” said Dr. Arthur “Tim” Garson Jr., vice president and Dean of the School of Medicine. Full story.

Karen Van LengenA celebratory groundbreaking at U.Va.’s School of Architecture on Sept. 29, led by President John T. Casteen and Architecture School Dean Karen Van Lengen (left), signified the beginning of a three-project expansion of Campbell Hall. The projects will incorporate the faculty’s own translation of the needs, ethics and aesthetics of the school into designs that will meet the requirements of a faculty and student body that has outgrown Campbell Hall. The projects also will give students lessons about place, design, local materials, building traditions and the role that technology plays in design. “We are designers. We care about our environment, and it is up to us to make it what we want it to be,” said Van Lengen. Full story.
