BOV, Casteen Give Full Commitment to Diversity Report

THE NEW REPORT of the President's Commission on Diversity and Equity received acclaim from the Board of Visitors on Saturday. But the kind words will be more than lip service, vowed President John T. Casteen III. Funding has been identified to carry out the recommendations, and they are being delegated to specific people. Pulitzer Prize-Winner Garry Wills to Speak at Law School Tomorrow

Garry Wills, a cultural historian who has written a number of books on presidents, religion and war, will speak on the “Just War Theory” at U.Va.’s School of Law tomorrow at 4:15 p.m. in the Caplin Pavilion. Wills, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University, is the author of “Mr. Jefferson’s University,” which details the architectural history of U.Va. Among his many achievements, Wills has received a Pulitzer Prize, the Merlie Curti Award of the American Historical Association and the Presidential Medal of the Endowment for the Humanities.

Ann Lee Brown Gives $10.5 Million to the University

The University has been given a $10.5 million gift by Ann Lee Brown (center), widow of former AT&T chairman Charles L. Brown, with $5 million allocated to the School of Engineering and Applied Science, $500,000 for an engineering scholarship and $5 million for the University library. The gift, in honor of Charles Brown, who graduated from U.Va. in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, created an endowment for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which was formally renamed the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Full story.
