11, 2005 -- On Oct. 14, the University School of Medicine
International Medicine Club, in association with the U.Va.
Center for Global
Health and the American Medical Student Association will
host the 1st Annual Medical School Symposium on Global Health.
The goals of the symposium are to provide medical students
the opportunity to share their experiences in Global Health,
to promote further interest in International Medicine and
to encourage medical students to seek experiences in Global
Health.
The afternoon will brings students, faculty and community
members together for three events to take place in Jordan
Hall. The first, a poster event from 1:30-3 p.m., will
allow medical students to present their experiences in international
medicine in a poster session. A presentation will follow
from 3-4 with presentations by students and by Dr. Nathan
Thielman.
Dr Thielman was a fellow in Infectious Disease at the University
of Virginia. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the
Internal Medicine Department at Duke University where he
is the Medical Director of the Infectious Disease Clinic.
His research includes treatment of HIV infection, infectious
diarrhea, international health and health care disparities
related to infectious diseases. His works takes him from
the halls of Duke Medical Center to rural North Carolina
to Northern Tanzania. He will speak on his career in International
Medicine as well as his current projects.
The event will conclude with a reception for presenters and
faculty from 4-5:30 p.m. The events will take place in and
around the Jordan Conference Center.
