International Affairs Expert to Deliver Fall Convocation Address

FAMILY WEEKEND AT U.VA. officially opens with the Fall Convocation address on Oct. 31. William B. Quandt, an international affairs expert on the Middle East and U.Va. professor of politics, will be the keynote speaker. Other events include a reception for students and their families following the ceremonies, as well as presentation of the Thomas Jefferson Award. Full story.

Documenting Dari: Preservation of an Endangered Language

The last living people fluent in Iran’s Dari language are village elders in Qasemabad, a Zoroastrian village in the city of Yazd. Sharing an Iranian heritage and a love of language, former U.Va. students Annahita Farudi and Maziar Toosarvandani traveled to their native country in hopes of developing teaching techniques that will resuscitate the endangered language. The two plan to return to the village next year to continue the Dari Language Project. Full story.

Teen Graduate Students Excel in Academics

Jennifer K. Wolf, 19, researches infectious diseases on a molecular level and is one of four teenage graduate students enrolled at U.Va. She came here at 16 as a third-year transfer student and, at 17, was the University’s youngest Harrison Undergraduate Research Award recipient. Full story.
