Engineering Professor Humphrey Takes a Fluid Approach to Life

JOSEPH “PEPE” HUMPHREY’s interest in fluid mechanics led him to a career in mechanical engineering. His knowledge of fluid mechanics has flowed into the discipline of biology, where he also holds an appointment. The laws of fluid mechanics help Humphrey and his colleagues study the sensory systems in spiders and moths to determine the way they sense and respond to their environment. Full story.

Ball State University President Selected to Lead U21 Subsidiary

U.Va. President John T. Casteen III announced Monday that Blaine A. Brownell, president of Ball State University, will lead U21pedagogica, a wholly owned subsidiary of Universitas 21. Brownell will tentatively begin his duties Feb. 1, 2004, and will work out of an office in Charlottesville. U21pedagogica is charged with developing global standards for academic quality for Universitas 21, an international consortium of 17 leading research universities in 10 countries, including U.Va. Classical Indian Vocal  Recitals to be Held at U.Va.

Pandit Laxmi G. Tewari, singer and ethnomusicologist, will present two classical Indian vocal programs at U.Va., along with musicians from the Washington area. On Saturday, Tewari will present “Morning Ragas” and “Evening Ragas.” Preceding the concerts, Tewari will speak Friday at a colloquium in U.Va.’s music department. Full story.
