Researcher Examines Application of Insanity Defense

Janet WarrenNOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY. That is the ruling handed down in criminal defense cases on average 30 times a year in the state of Virginia, according to Janet Warren (right), professor of clinical psychiatric medicine and associate director of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at U.Va.’s Health System. A closer examination of sanity evaluations by Warren shows them to be risky undertakings that are backed with minimal research or analysis. Her findings have raised questions about how sanity decisions are applied in Virginia. Full story.

Emmet Street Traffic Closure Begins Tonight

Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, Emmet Street will be closed temporarily to allow for placement of a main span box girder. Traffic will be restored no later than 6 a.m. Wednesday. Signs designating the traffic detour route are in place.

Charlottesville Mayor and Maurice D. Cox (right) and Satyendra S. Huja, a staff member of the citizen-run Historic Resources Task Force, unveiled a historic plaque Monday honoring writer Edgar Allan Poe, who attended U.Va. in 1826. Full story.
