U.Va.’s Investment Management Company Names New CEO to Oversee Endowment

CHRISTOPHER J. BRIGHTMAN has been appointed chief executive officer of the University of Virginia Investment Management Co., which is responsible for overseeing the investment of assets of nearly $2.5 billion. He is currently the chief investment officer of Strategic Investment Group in Arlington. Brightman replaces Alice W. Handy, UVIMCO’s former CEO, who retired in January. He will begin his tenure on Dec. 1. Full story.

November is HIV/AIDS Awareness Month at U.Va.

U.Va. President John T. Casteen III has declared November to be “HIV/AIDS Awareness Month” at U.Va. The annual observance — formerly just a week long — was created as a service learning project through a nursing course, “HIV/AIDS: A Personal and Social Perspective,” taught by Reba Moyer Childress. Various awareness and fund-raising activities will take place throughout November and early December, including a benefit concert, auction, a vigil and the AIDS Memorial Quilt display. Full story.

Goals Becoming Actuality for U.Va.’s School of Nursing

U.Va.’s School of Nursing is one of the entities included in the Health System’s Decade Plan. Implemented in 2003, the joint strategic plan umbrellas the entire Health System, identifying specific goals and timelines for accomplishment. Beth Merwin, R.N. (left) and Dawn Rigney, R.N., are pleased that the nursing school is on schedule in meeting the plan’s designated goals. In fact, in many areas the school is ahead of schedule. Full story.
