“TELEMEDICINE
IS THE USE of advanced telecommunications and
other technologies for medical diagnosis, ongoing
patient care and health-related distance learning,”
said Dr. Karen S. Rheuban (far right), medical
director of U.Va.’s telemedicine program,
at an event held Friday at U.Va.’s Medical
Center. Telemedicine connects the Medical Center
with 43 rural health care providers and has served
5,700 patients. In an effort to further lower
the cost of line access, the Federal Communications
Commission will look at new rules for telemedicine
to increase subsidies for telecommunications lines.

Come
5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the parking crunch will ease
a bit as U.Va.’s new 1,200-space Emmet/Ivy
Parking Garage opens its gates. “Many people
worked relentlessly to design and construct a
garage that is attractive, safe and sensitive
to the concerns of our neighbors,” said
Leonard W. Sandridge, U.Va.’s executive
vice president and chief operating officer. Construction
of the five-level, $15.75 million garage was completed

metals, oxides, sulfide particles and other substances
that precipitate a process without directly being
involved. Matthew Neurock, U.Va. professor of
chemical engineering, is using tools and techniques
associated with nanotechnology to design the next
generation of cataylsts.
