U.Va. Environmental Sciences Professor Rethinks the Assumptions About Everglades Restoration

WHAT HAPPENED TO the crystal clear waters that flowed through the Florida Bay some 20 years ago? The late 1980s saw a massive die-off of the abundance of seagrass that covered the bottom of the bay. Jay Zieman, a U.Va. environmental sciences professor, has spent more than 35 years studying the Florida Bay, looking for answers as to why the seagrass mysteriously disappeared and what made it so plentiful in the first place. The seagrass is slowly returning to the bay, but Zieman is quick to express concern over the level in which it should be restored. Full story.

Alumnus Ross Kane Aspires to Find Peace in a Far-Away Land

Ross Kane had his ambitions set on a music degree when he arrived at U.Va. Somewhere along the line, he changed his goals and graduated with a major in foreign affairs and a minor in religious studies. Today, Kane is focusing on peacemaking in Sudan, all the while spreading harmony as a sax player in a Kenyan jazz band. Kane is entering his third year of assignments with the New Sudan Council of Churches, where he serves as an international advocate for diplomacy between Southern Sudanese tribes. Full story.

U.Va. Health System Opens Cutting Edge Operating Rooms

Remaining in the forefront of advanced surgical technologies, U.Va.’s Medical Center is opening 14 state-of-the-art operating rooms, located in the facility’s newly created wing. New features include a new air handling system that creates a germ-free barrier around the patient and flat panel screens for viewing images from radiology and digital video recordings. Full story.
