Study: Teens of Same-Sex Parents Develop as Normally as Those Raised by Heterosexuals

WHETHER A CHILD is raised by same-sex or opposite-sex parents, it’s the quality of the child-parent relationship that reinforces successful adolescent development, and not the family type, according to a study co-authored by U.Va. psychology professor Charlotte J. Patterson. The study also shows that the dating and romantic behavior displayed by teenagers of gay parents are similar to those of teens raised by male-female partners. Full story.

Juvenile Execution Likely to Be Banned by Supreme Court, Experts Predict

Should a criminal be sentenced to death for crimes committed before turning 18? This was the topic of a recent discussion at U.Va.’s Law School involving a panel of experts who had heard arguments in a case involving a 17-year-old executed for committing murder. Presently, only 19 states allow capital punishment for juveniles, with Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma the most likely to implement it. There is a high likelihood that the Supreme Court will abolish the juvenile death penalty, considering the strong consensus against it, the experts said. Full story.

Drama Department Presents ‘The Cherry Orchard’

U.Va.’s Drama Department brings Anton Chekhov’s final play, “The Cherry Orchard,” to the stage tonight as the second production of its 2004-2005 season. Described as a comedy and a drama, the play follows a once wealthy and honored Russian family as they cope with the loss of their estate. Curtain time is 8 p.m.; performances are scheduled through Saturday and again Dec. 1-4. Full story.
