Site
and design guidelines for the expansion of
the
south chiller plant were approved at the University’s
Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee
meeting on Nov. 7. The
addition will bolster an
existing chiller plant near Medical Research Building 4. The
$14 million plant will provide an additional 6,000 tons of
chilled water to the Medical Center for air conditioning in
new projects such as the Clinical Cancer Center, the Medical
Education building, the nursing school building, the hospital
bed expansion
project and future
hospital expansion. The site, currently a parking lot, will
be screened from other Medical Center facilities as well as
the adjacent Fifeville neighborhood. Full

We’re
all probably familiar with the term “outhouse,” but
what about “OUTin house?” Thanks
to collaborative efforts between students
in architecture, landscape architecture,
planning and engineering, and the Piedmont
Housing Alliance, the new EcoMOD — economical,
ecological, modern and modular — house
in Charlottesville’s
Fifeville neighborhood will become “home” for
an eligible family. In addition to abundant
lighting, strategic design delivers dialogue
between outside and inside areas, which
is furthered with flexible spaces like
a sleeping
porch — with the same square-footage
as the master bedroom — and a fold-out
table adjacent to the kitchen that offers
optional additional counter space. Full
story.
