New Driving Safety Laboratory Assesses Driving Abilities

Daniel CoxWE SEE THEM EVERYDAY — speed demons and aggressive drivers who bully their way through traffic. According to the Insurance Information Institute, the culprits are usually under the age of 55. Still, a question remains: Just how safe is it for senior citizens to be on the highways? U.Va.’s Health System has opened a new Driving Safety Laboratory that helps identify drivers’ strengths and weaknesses and suggests ways to compensate for any weaknesses, according to Daniel Cox, assistant professor of Behavioral Medicine in U.Va.’s Department of Psychiatric Medicine and director of the driving safety lab. Two U.Va. Scientists Recognized as Leaders in Science and Technology

Scientific American magazine has named U.Va. scientists Joe Poon and Gary Shiflet as research leaders in its “2004 Scientific American 50,” the magazine’s prestigious annual list recognizing outstanding acts of leadership in science and technology. The list appears in the magazine’s December issue, now available on newstands. Winners were honored at a Nov. 16 celebration at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City. Full story.

Flexible spending accounts are an effective measure for putting away money to cover annual costs, but many are unfamiliar with the details of the program, according to Linda Way-Smith, U.Va.’s director of employee benefits.
