Mitman Tapped as Marshall Scholar: McLean Student to Pursue Master’s in Physics

PERSERVANCE AND COMMITMENT to learning have earned fourth-year U.Va. student Kurt Elliott Mitman the chance to shine as U.Va.’s sixth Marshall Scholar. Every year, up to 40 scholars are selected from the best and brightest from across America who compete for the annual awards. The scholarships finance two years of study at any university in the United Kingdom. Mitman plans to pursue a master’s degree in physics at Oxford University in Oxford, England. Full story.

U.Va. Sends Acceptance Letters to 872 Early Decision Applicants

A select number of early decision applicants will soon find in their mailboxes what they have anxiously been awaiting — letters of acceptance to U.Va. The letters were mailed to 872 applicants today. This year shows a significant increase in the number of international and African-American applicants in comparison with last year. “I’m struck at the number of international applicants,” said John A. Blackburn, U.Va.’s dean of admission. Full story.

Employee Assistnace Available Via the Web

The Faculty and Employee Assistance Program has updated its Web site to provide more information about its comprehensive services. Among the features are self-assessment tools for conditions such as anxiety and depression, eldercare services available to employees taking care of a parent, guidelines for supervisors in managing their employees, and FEAP newsletters. There are also links to online resources.
