ONCE
PLENTIFUL IN the bays on Virginia’s Atlantic
Coast, eelgrass met its demise in the early
1930s, falling prey to disease and later
being wiped out by a hurricane. Temperate
eelgrass is one of
the
most
productive
ecosystems on earth, but it must have light
to flourish. U.Va. graduate student
Sarah
Lawson (left),
along with U.Va. environmental science professors
Patricia Wiberg (center) and Karen McGlathery
(right), have been researching ways to reintroduce
eelgrass to Hog Island Bay, a lagoon that is
part of the Virginia Coastal Reserve Long-Term
Ecological Research site on Virginia’s
Eastern Shore. Full

This
holiday season, help spread joy among the less
fortunate members of your communities by
participating in the Commonwealth
of Virginia
Campaign. Authorized
by Gov. Mark Warner,
the campaign provides an easy, effective method
for U.Va. employees to contribute to the charities
of their choice. Nearly 1,100 nonprofit organizations
participate in the CVC annually, including those
engaged in medical research, animal welfare,
environmental conservation, historic preservation,
and health and human services. The deadline for
turning in pledge cards is Friday. Full

Patients
and families arriving at U.Va.’s Health System
will now find administrators and managers, including
chief financial officer Larry Fitzgerald (right),
greeting them at the door. U.Va.’s transportation
and greeter
staff already do a great job of assisting people
upon their arrival, and the Medical Center is
simply increasing leadership interaction with
patients, families and visitors, according to
R. Edward Howell, vice president and chief executive
officer of the Medical Center. Managers in the
welcoming program offer an additional level
of comfort by answering questions, giving directions
and solving problems. Full
