| “I Zwicky 18” is the young galaxy U.Va. astronomer
Trinh Thuan has discovered. |

WHERE DO GALAXIES
come from? It all starts with the
birth of a star, but what happens in between
isn’t crystal clear. A discovery by U.Va.
astronomer Trinh Thuan may offer the only opportunity
for astronomers to study the building blocks
from which galaxies are formed. Still wet behind
the ears as far as galaxies go, “I Zwicky 18”
may be as young as 500 million years old, in
comparison to the Milky Way and other galaxies,
typically about 12 billion years old. Full

Changing
times often call for changes in structure. After
almost 15 years of operating with severe reductions
in state funding, and the realization that the
situation with the state will never return to
its original status, the University is charting
a new path. U.Va., along with the College of
William & Mary and Virginia Tech, have made
headlines for their desire to become chartered
universities. U.Va. President John T. Casteen
III explains what Charter is and why it’s
right for U.Va. Full
