U.Va. Math Professor Brian Parshall Helping to Create a Fertile Ground For Mathematical Research

OFTENTIMES IT IS an exchange of ideas with colleagues or a conference that fosters the otherwise solitary work of mathematicians. U.Va.’s Institute of Mathematical Science, organized by U.Va. professors James Howland, Jeffrey Holt and Brian Parshall (left), provides a fertile ground from which U.Va. mathematicians can reap the benefits from such collaborative creativity. In addition to annual conferences that bring in a steady stream of national and international visitors, the institute sponsors seminars on applications of mathematics, bringing together mathematicians and others who use mathematics in their work. U.Va. Ranks in the Top 20 For Study Abroad Numbers

With 1,427 U.Va. students studying abroad last semester, the University was recognized as one of the “Top Twenty” universities sending the highest number of U.S. students abroad for academic year 2003-2004. This designation was awarded by the Institute of International Education, the independent, nonprofit organization that administers the Fulbright Scholar program and that was created in the wake of WWI to foster greater understanding between nations through international educational exchange. What’s In a Name? The Past and Future of Public Health

When devastating events occur that threaten the world’s public health, such as an earthquake, a hurricane or the threat of a flu pandemic, getting the right information to the right people at the right time can make all the difference in making informed and equitable choices. Ten years after the launch of the U.Va. Health System’s Department of Health Evaluation Sciences, the department has taken the new name of Department of Public Health Sciences to reflect its evolving mission to seek to manage health-related data through creative approaches.
