A
GEM INDEED, the University’s newest library
is nothing short of priceless. The 72,000-square-foot
facility, 80 percent contained underground,
is the home of the Albert and Shirley Small
Special
Collections Library and the The Mary and David
Harrison Institute for American History, Literature,
and Culture. The Small Library,
formally dedicated Nov. 10, occupies the below-ground
portion and houses rare
books, manuscripts,
maps and University
archives, in addition to being the permanent
home for the Smalls’ Declaration of Independence
collection. The Harrison Institute, formally
dedicated on Wednesday, occupies the
above-ground portion and contains two exhibit
galleries:
a permanent display on the Flowerdew Hundred
and a rotating
display in the main-floor gallery drawn from
the University’s Special Collections. Full
story.
