New Library on Invaluable Asset to U.Va. and Beyond

U.Va.’s New LibraryA GEM INDEED, the University’s newest library is nothing short of priceless. The 72,000-square-foot facility, 80 percent contained underground, is the home of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library and the The Mary and David Harrison Institute for American History, Literature, and Culture. The Small Library, formally dedicated Nov. 10, occupies the below-ground portion and houses rare books, manuscripts, maps and University archives, in addition to being the permanent home for the Smalls’ Declaration of Independence collection. The Harrison Institute, formally dedicated on Wednesday, occupies the above-ground portion and contains two exhibit galleries: a permanent display on the Flowerdew Hundred and a rotating display in the main-floor gallery drawn from the University’s Special Collections. Let Your Creative Juices Flow: Creative Writing Contest Now Under Way

Calling all creative writers. Meridian, a semiannual literary journal produced by U.Va. in conjunction with its master of fine arts creative writing program, is sponsoring its annual editor’s prizes in poetry and fiction. The winning entries earn $1,000 each. This year’s entry deadline is midnight on Dec. 20, and all entries — and entry fees — must be made online at www.readmeridian.com (choose the “Contest” link). Blue Ridge Mountains
 
U.Va. Seeks Salvation for Blue Ridge Hospital Property

The erosive effects of nature have prompted U.Va. to take a closer look at its buildings at the former Blue Ridge Sanatorium property. U.Va. has announced plans to preserve some 19 historic structures, possibly to be used as office space. The 142-acre site would also provide ample space for new development, including housing and research park activities. Full story.
