THE
GOOD, BAD and the ugly — all facets of
the 2004 election that were points of discussion
during the seventh annual American Democracy
Conference held Dec. 10. The conference, sponsored
by U.Va.’s Center for Politics, included
an all-star lineup of journalists and political
operatives from both sides of the isle, including
Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.) and Donna Brazile,
Democratic strategist. Panelists assessed strengths
and weaknesses of the Bush and Kerry campaigns,
examined the feeding frenzies that dominated
the election, and targeted the future of the
Democratic Party. Full
story.

Santa’s
two red-headed elves — head U.Va. basketball
coach Peter Gillen (left) and Daily Progress
sports writer Andrew Joyner — were ringing
the bells for charity at the Barracks Road Shopping
Center Dec. 15, raising money for the Salvation
Army. “I have been blessed with many things,
and this is a way to help the poor and the less
fortunate,” said Gillen. Having done this
for three or four years, Gillen said the people
in Charlottesville and Albemarle are among the
most generous in the country. Gillen said he would
probably be ringing the bell again on Christmas
Eve.
