Online Training Helps University Employees Sharpen Their Skills

November 25, 2003

Staff reports

Employees now have access to more than 1,300 Web-based computer and professional development courses through a pilot program, offered by the U.Va. Division of Training in partnership with ITC. NETg, a Thompson Learning company widely recognized as an industry leader in the field, is supporting the program through a customized “U.Va. NETgLearning” Web site.

NETg provides a cost-effective means for advancing employees’ knowledge and mastery of desktop applications and tools most common to U.Va. It also offers extensive coverage of other information technologies and related topics, including more than 200 courses in business and professional development.

The pilot project is intended to help U.Va. employees achieve immediate learning goals, thereby improving job performance and furthering career development. Taking courses may aid employees and their supervisors in fulfilling Employee Work Profile training plans.

For a one-time fee of $135 per person, University-affiliated employees access to NETg Learning for a year. Information about all the courses, sample courses, registration and user instructions are available at http://www.hrs.virginia.edu/dot/netg/index.htm. Employees can call 243-5998 with questions.

The Division of Training will register users and provide account and password information. Staff also will collect information from users and other U.Va. stakeholders during the pilot to see whether to continue or expand the service.
