VA. STUDENTS
TO BE CHECKED FOR SEX OFFENSE
By Kristen Gelineau of The Associated Press
A new law requiring Virginia's colleges to hand over prospective students'
personal information to police for cross-checking against sex offender
lists is coming under fire from privacy advocates and education leaders.
Under the law, which takes effect July 1, public and private college
officials must send state police the names, Social Security numbers and
birth dates of all students accepted to their schools. ... UNIVERSITY
OF VIRGINIA spokesman Jeff Hanna said the school already asks applicants
if they have been convicted of a felony and can deny admission to anyone
because of a felony record.
AREA STUDENTS WIN GOLD
By Christina Tkacik of The Daily Progress
[...] Albemarle High School junior [Mos Rasool] and his four friends
from Monticello High School were finalists in the National History Contest,

a gold medal for its performance: a sharp indictment of the legacy of
Harry Byrd, leader of massive resistance to the desegregation of Virginia's
public schools...For their research, the students conducted interviews
and got special permission from Harry Byrd Jr., who left the U.S. Senate
in 1983, to examine his personal correspondence at the University of
