Nurse Readies to Leave Children, Head to Iraq

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Karen Pruett stands in front of her soon-to-be alma mater, U.Va.’s School of Nursing, with her two children, Kathryn and Patrick.LT. CMDR. KAREN PRUETT KNEW what she was getting into when she joined the U.S. Navy. And she knew that the Navy wasn’t going to help her get an advanced nursing degree from U.Va. without expecting anything in return. In fact, she’s proud to be serving her country. But that won’t make it any easier to leave her children after graduation this May and head back to Iraq for her second tour of duty in the Gulf. Full story.

The U.Va. Health System’s Department of Emergency Medicine has been awarded the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine’s highest rating, making it only the second such department in the nation to earn that designation. Full story.

Mellon Grant Allows Rare-Document Survey

There are some 15 million manuscripts in the University Library’s manuscript and archival holdings. A $265,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will fund a much-needed survey of their significance and condition. Full story.

U.Va. Offers Admission to 5,661 Applicants

College-bound high school seniors used to engage in a springtime mailbox-watching ritual, waiting for that fat or thin envelope that announced the outcomes of their various applications. These days, though, the ritual has changed: more and more are logging on to university Web sites to learn their fate. At U.Va., where decisions were mailed — and posted online — last week, the number of electronic applications more than doubled this year. Full story.
