27, 2003 -- Charlottesville Mayor Maurice D. Cox and Satyendra
S. Huja, a staff member of the citizen-run Historic Resources
Task Force, strip a red ribbon from a historic plaque on McCormick
Road honoring writer Edgar Allan Poe, who attended the University
in 1826, in front of his former room on the Range. Cox, who
cited the impact Poes "The Tell-tale Heart"
story had on him as a youth, said the plaque, which was unveiled
Monday, was a recognition that "great people are attracted
to great places." A professor of architecture at the University,
Cox was also pleased the impetus came from a community member,
Winston Churchill Gooding, who is part of the task force, which
arranged for the plaque. The city and the University split the
$1,200 cost. Leonard W. Sandridge, executive vice president
and chief operating officer of the University, praised Poe as
"a bright person with an extraordinary memory," who
entertained fellow students with readings in his room and who
still attracts visitors to the University.
