U.Va.'s Fifth
Annual Energy Awareness Day to be Held Oct. 6
September 27, 1999
-- The University of Virginia's fifth annual Energy Awareness Day will be
held Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in front of Thornton
Hall.
A new event is a solar powered hotdog cooking contest: Engineering School
students will be competing to achieve the greatest number of the
best cooked hotdogs with their individually constructed solar grills.
Displays will include:
- Recycling demonstrations and informative freebies, presented by the
Division of Recoverable and Disposable Resources (recycling)
- Cool cars: one electric powered provided by Virginia Power, one solar
powered built by U.Va. engineering students.
- Water saver shower head demonstrations (no showering on the Lawn, please)
- Free copies (while the last) of the now famous "Rotunda in Desert" water
conservation poster
- Renewable energy displays, including a hydrogen fuel cell (similar to
the power supply on the space shuttles) and a photovoltaic (solar
electric) panel.
- Samples of solar cooked hotdogs
- RideShare with lots of great information and informative freebies
- Demonstrations of electric tools and home appliances provided by VA
Power
- University Police with helpful information on safety Energy Awareness
festivities will be repeated Thursday, Sept. 30 for the Health
System and Medical Schools audiences in the hallway adjacent to
the main cafeteria from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. but without the solar cooking
event.
