U.Va. Professor Meets With White House Staff To Discuss Public School Leadership

Sept. 23, 1999 -- Frederick M. "Rick" Hess, an assistant professor in the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and government department, was invited to the White House on Wednesday, Sept. 15, to meet with Bruce N. Reed, an assistant to the President and domestic policy advisor, other White House staffers and a select group of school superintendents to discuss leadership in the public schools.

The small group of educators met for approximately three hours to discuss a variety of issues pertaining to school governance, including teacher shortages, federal regulations, accountability measures and testing.

"It was essentially a brainstorming session," said Hess, author of two 1999 books on educational policy, "Spinning Wheels: The Politics of Urban School Reform" and "School Choice in the Real World." "We tackled issues concerning school system governance and the challenges facing school leaders."
