Ambassador To Speak At U.Va. On May 12
May
6, 1999 -- His Excellency Baki Ilkin, Ambassador
of the Turkish Republic, will speak in the Dome Room of the Rotunda
on Wednesday, May 12 at 2 p.m. In a diplomatic career spanning more
than three decades, Ambassador Ilkin served in Athens, Moscow and
London as well as senior posts in the Turkish Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in Ankara. From 1981 to 1983 and, again, from 1993 to 1996,
he was Private Advisor to the Foreign Minister. Following more than
three years as Chief of the Private Cabinet of the President of
Turkey, he was named ambassador to Pakistan and Denmark successively.
In 1998, Ambassador Ilkin was assigned to Washington, following
a tour as ambassador to the Netherlands.
Ambassador
Ilkin is married and has two children, including a 1998 graduate
of the University of Virginia.
The
address, which is open to the University and Charlottesville communities,
will follow a lunch in Ambassador Ilkin's honor, hosted by President
John T. Casteen III. His presentation is sponsored by the University's
Institute for Global Policy Research.
