Liberal
Arts Majors Find Themselves In Hot Demand During
March 1 New York Recruiting Event
Feb.
24, 1999 -- Armed
with their youth, enthusiasm and -- of all things -- future liberal
arts degrees, many university and college students will engage in
multiple job interviews during a recruiting event March 1 at the
New York Marriott Marquis at 1535 Broadway.
Representatives
from more than 20 New York employers will interview approximately
150 students from Smith College, Northwestern University, the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia.
The recruiters will conduct more than 350 interviews in the Mariott's
ballroom from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Students
in a wide range of liberal arts majors are finding strong interest
in their talents. For example, Rembert "Mac" McNeer, an English
major at U.Va., has six interviews scheduled. Other students report
similar numbers of interviews scheduled throughout the day.
Conducting
the interviews will be representatives from non-profit organizations,
legal and social science research firms and advertising, public
relations and publishing companies.
The
day is made possible through the New York Recruiting Alliance, a
cooperative arrangement among Smith, Northwestern and UNC-Chapel
Hill. U.Va. is participating in the alliance for the first time
this year.
"We
felt that the event was an excellent opportunity to expose students
to employers who don't traditionally conduct campus interviews,"
said James McBride, director of career planning and placement at
U.Va.
Students
pay their own expenses, including transportation and lodging, to
participate in the interviews.
"As
an English major, I'm very encouraged to see that so many employers
felt that a liberal arts degree was an asset when paired with the
right experience," McNeer said.
