Parents Double University Reward For Information Leading To The
Arrest Of Robbery/Rape Suspect
August 28, 1999 -- An anonymous group of concerned
University of Virginia parents today doubled a reward to $10,000
for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man
responsible for the rape of a University student on Thursday.
On
Friday, the University issued an initial $5,000 reward for the apprehension
of the suspect who also robbed the victim and another University
student during the assault.
This
morning, parents met with University officials to offer an additional
$5,000.
President
John T. Casteen III, in a welcoming address to several hundred in-coming
first-year students and their parents, this afternoon announced
the parents' initiative and praised their support. He said there
is belief among law officials that such a reward could help lead
to an early arrest of the assailant. "It also sends a message about
the importance of maintaining the safety of student life here,"
Casteen said.
The
University immediately put additional police patrols on Grounds,
as well as in surrounding neighborhoods where large numbers of University
students live. University
Police are working closely with City of Charlottesville
Police on the investigation.
Any
information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect
