U.Va.
Student and Twin Brother to Receive National Recognition April 18
For Helping People in Two States
April
9, 1999 -- Twins Frank and Jeff Griffiths prove
that the old saying "nice guys finish last" is wrong. Their broad
range of generous activities benefiting people of all ages will
be recognized nationally April 18.
The
brothers, one of whom attends the University of Miami (Ohio) and
the other, the University of Virginia, spent more than a year organizing
nearly 75 events at their two campuses during the national Make
A Difference Day in the fall. The events attracted approximately
2,500 volunteers who collected books, renovated homes, spruced up
parks, cleaned streets, assembled clothing and gathered food to
benefit children, the elderly, homeless families and low-income
residents in the two states.
USA
Weekend magazine, which created Make a Difference Day in partnership
with the Points of Light Foundation in 1992, will honor the Griffiths
brothers with a $10,000 award and will feature them in its April
18 issue. The
boys will also appear on CNN Live Sunday Morning that day.
A third-year
psychology major at U.Va., Frank Griffiths began to organize community
service efforts last year after seeing the success his brother had
in staging Make A Difference events the previous year at Miami (Ohio).
Although carrying heavy course loads, Jeff Griffiths, a third-year
student majoring in secondary education, and Frank Griffiths estimate
they often devoted more than 30 hours weekly to organizing projects
that pulled together approximately 50 community and university organizations.
