McIntire
Chamber Music Series Features "Spooky" Russian Music
October
27, 2000 -- The McIntire Chamber Music Series continues
on Sunday, Oct. 29, 3:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall with The Albemarle
Ensemble and the Rivanna Quartet. The Quartet will perform the famous
Russian chamber piece, Quartet No. 2 y Dmitri Shostakovich. An intense
work, it suggests the spooky Halloween spirit, with its chromatic
and diabolical Waltz, sometimes thought of as a dance of death.
Members include Katherine Winterstein and Susan Black, violinists,
Richard Baritaud, viola, and Paige Riggs, cello.
Guest
artist, pianist Mimi Tung will join ensemble members, Susan Black,
violin, and Nancy Garlick, clarinet, for the colorful Russian Trio
for clarinet, violin & piano by Aram Khatchaturian. Full of sounds
from eastern Europe, including rural folk music and highly rhythmic
dance tunes, the ornamented work demonstrates the sparkling virtuosity
of the three musicians.
The
Albemarle Ensemble will open the program with Woodwind Quintet by
Georges Onslow. New oboist, Nicole Golay, originally from California,
will make her debut with the quintet, joining Margaret Newcomb,
flute, Nancy Garlick, clarinet, Valentin Martchev, bassoon and Dwight
Purvis, horn. Mostly forgotten today, the French composer was highly
regarded in his own day by the likes of Robert Schumann, who claimed
that Onslow should be included in the ranks of composers like Haydn,
Mozart and Beethoven.
Tickets
are $10 for the General Public, $5 for students, 5ARTS$ for U.Va.
students, and free for high school students. Tickets may be purchased
at the door or by calling 924-3984.
