Nominations Sought
For Batipps Memorial Scholarship And Prize
November
15, 2000 -- Nominations are being sought for the
Gregory Raven Batipps (GRB) Memorial Scholarship and Literary Prize,
both of which recognize outstanding University of Virginia African
American students who are active in one or more U.Va. student publications.
The
GRB Scholarship winner will receive $5,000 in tuition and fees,
the Literary Prize recipient will be awarded $750.
Gregory
Raven Batipps, who entered U.Va. in 1990, was known for his exceptional
dedication and motivation. Batipps tutored local high school students
and wrote for the Cavalier Daily and the Black Student Alliance's
Pride magazine. He died in April 1992 as the result of an automobile
accident.
U.Va.
faculty or staff may nominate students by sending supporting information
to Judy J. Pointer at Alumni Hall by Dec. 1. Preference will be
given to second- and third-year students. Winners will be notified
in writing by Jan. 5.
The
Gregory Raven Batipps Memorial Scholarship and Literary Prize are
a part of the Walter N. Ridley Scholarship Fund, established in
1987 to further develop the tradition of leadership, service and
giving at the University of Virginia.
