The
Ethics Of Place: Lessons From Green Plans Of Europe
March
23, 2000 -- Tim Beatley, associate professor of urban
and environmental planning at the University of Virginia and author
of the recently published book, "Green Urbanism: Learning from
European Cities," will discuss the sustainable city movement
in Europe and its implications for solutions to sprawl in America
on Friday, March 31, at 12:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall, Room 153. His
talk is titled "The Ethics of Place: Lessons from Green Plans
of Europe."
Beatley
will discuss cutting-edge policies and programs and innovative planning
tools used in the twenty-five European cities he studied for his
book. Among them are renewable energy initiatives, transportation
alternatives, and ecological building practices. He found that looking
at the city as a living organism can help reduce sprawl and at the
same time reduce taxes, save money, and improve quality of life.
Beatleys
lecture is the last in a series of lectures on ethics in architecture
sponsored by the University of Virginia School of Architecture.
