President
Casteen Names Interim Chancellor at
U.Va.'s College at Wise
October
3, 2000 -- University of Virginia
President John T. Casteen III traveled to U.Va.'s
College at Wise today (10/3) to talk to faculty, students and
staff about plans to replace their popular chancellor, L. Jay Lemons.
On
Sunday, Susquehanna University named Lemons its 14th
president after a nine-month search. He will formally assume the
presidency early in 2001, but expects to spend some time at the
Selinsgrove, Pa., campus this fall.
Casteen
said George E. Culbertson, the college's provost and senior
vice chancellor, will serve as interim chancellor while a national
search is conducted. Culbertson, who graduated from what was then
Clinch Valley College in 1957, has served in a number of academic
and administrative positions since returning to the college in 1970
after teaching mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy.
"George
will sustain the momentum that the college has developed under Jay
Lemons' leadership," Casteen said. "He is respected as a senior
leader not only at the University, but throughout Virginia. Legislators
know him. The state's officials know him. And the Board of Visitors
knows him and values his advice. We are fortunate that one who knows
the college as well as George does is here at this particular juncture
in its history."
Culbertson
had previously announced his retirement as of Dec. 31, 2001. Casteen
said the interim appointment would not change that date, as he expects
a new chancellor to be in place by then.
He
plans to name a search committee within the next several weeks,
in consultation with the college's board. A firm that specializes
in higher education presidential searches will assist the committee.
