New
Music Ensemble to Perform on April 17 in Old Cabell Hall
April
17, 2000 -- The McIntire
Department of Music proudly presents the New Music Ensemble
on Monday, April 17, at 8:15 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall at the University
of Virginia.
The
program features a variety of music and artists, including Shostakovich,
"Quartet number 8," which will be performed by a student group currently
studying in the Guild Trio Chamber Music Performance Seminar, Music
364. This is one of Shastakovich's most popular and gripping quartets,
and is often also played in a string orchestra arrangement. It contains
intensely sorrowful, slow, and sustained as well as brutal, fast
and relentless music.
The
program will also feature two guest artists, David and Miriam Teie.
David is a cellist in the National Symphony, and also a composer,
while Miriam is a pianist. These artists will be performing "Adagio"
and "Allegro" for cello and piano, which was composed by David and
inspired by Schumann's famous "Adagio and Allegro."
The
performance will also include an improvisational work, organized
and coached by John D'earth, which will involve many of the Music
Department's most talented players. The work centers around readings
by Lisa Russ-Spaar of her poetry accompanied by the players, and
involves a dynamic interplay between the reader and the musicians.
The
program will also feature "Umbrian Colors," an evocative work for
violin and guitar by Barbara Kolb, performed by Janet Orenstein
and Mike Rosensky.
The
concert is free and open to the public. For further information,
call the Old Cabell Box Office at (804) 924-3984.
