Leading Art Scholar Of American Modernism To Lecture At U.Va. On Abstract Expressionism

January 19, 2000 -- "Abstract Expressionism, Race and Gender" will be the topic of modern art scholar Ann Eden Gibson’s lecture 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27, in Room 160 Campbell Hall at the University of Virginia. Following the lecture there will be a reception in Fayerweather Gallery.

Gibson is a leading authority on American modernism. Her recently published and widely-acclaimed book, "Abstract Expressionism: Other Politics," looks at the history of the abstract expressionist movement with consideration of the artists of color, women, and gays and lesbians whose works have previously been neglected in the study of this period.

Currently the chair of the Department of Art History at the University of Delaware, Gibson has taught at Yale and SUNY-Stony Brook.
