March
3, 2000 -- On Monday, March 6, at 7:45 p.m., Susan
Glaser will give a flute masterclass in Old Cabell Hall. This masterclass
is free and open to the public.
The
students participating in the masterclass are Andrea Henderson playing
Roussel's Joueurs de Flute. April Park will be playing Ibert's
Concerto, Carolyn Chen playing Frank Martin's Ballade
and Sylvia Schaefer will be playing Schubert's Theme and Variations.
All of these students are from the studio of Margaret Newcomb.
Susan
Glaser has performed to great critical acclaim throughout the United
States and in Europe and Latin America. The recipient of a Fulbright
Grant for study in Vienna, Glaser has also won prizes in the National
Flute Association's Young Musicians Competition. She has championed
new music throughout her career and has commissioned and premiered
new works by George Tsontakis, Tristan Keuris, Urs Leimgruber and
Amanda Harberg.
Glaser's
principal teachers have been Julius Baker, Geoffrey Gilbert and
Peter Lloyd. She holds the Doctor of Music degree from the Julliard
School and currently serves on the faculty of Columbia University
Teachers College. The New Yorker says of her performances: "An
extraordinarily high level of conviction, thought and display ...
trills, flutterings and multiple tones flew from the lips of Susan
Glaser."
This
masterclass is made possible in part by a generous donation from
the Branneon-Cooper Fund.
