Attorney
General Janet Reno to Speak April 1 at Conference Marking 40th Anniversary
of Virginia Journal of International Law
March
27, 2000 -- U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will
speak at the University of Virginia School
of Law at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1. Her talk, open to the public
in Caplin Auditorium, is scheduled to be the keynote address of
a conference marking the 40th anniversary of the student-edited
Virginia Journal of International Law. Reno will speak on issues
related to international criminal law.
The
conference also will feature afternoon panel discussions at the
Miller Center of Public Affairs by international law experts closely
involved with or close observers of two current issues: the recent
extradition proceedings involving Chilean Gen. Augusto Pinochet
and the development of a new permanent International Criminal Court.
At
1:30 p.m. at the Miller
Center, a panel on the Pinochet extradition case will feature
Clive Nicholls, the British lawyer who headed Pinochetıs legal defense.
At
3:30 p.m. at the Miller Center, a panel will focus on the current
status of establishing a permanent International Criminal Court
for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. Panelists
will include Shabtai Rosenne, retired Israeli ambassador-at-large,
and David Scheffer, U.S. ambassador-at-large for war crimes issues.
The
conference is sponsored by the Virginia Journal of International
Law, the oldest student-edited international law journal in the
world. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the journal is
recognized as one of the top scholarly publications in its field
and is distributed to subscribers in 35 countries.
